Clinical Evaluation of Roentgen Diagnosis of Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis

Abstract
Roentgen examination is generally used in the diagnosis of maxillary sinus disease, especially the sinusitis. It has been pointed out that the radiologic examination often shows inaccurate findings which may be of technical of anatomical or of anatomical nature and that a radiologically opaque maxillary sinus is to be regarded as a sign but not as a definite diagnosis.
The purpose of this investigation was to study the correctness of the roentgen diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis. The results of roentgen examination and operative findings were compared in a series & 101 maxillary sinuses.
The results were as followings;
1. In this series the total numbers of agreements between the roentgen diagnosis and operative findings were 87 cases(86. 1%) out of 101 operated sinuses.
2. In 8 cases(7.9%) which showed highly pathologic roentgen findings, they had normal or minimal pathologic operative findings.
3. In 6 cases(5.9%) which showed negative or minimal pathologic roentgen findings, they had highly pathologic operative findings.
4. In 14 cases which showed false positive or false negative roentgen findings, the causes of false positive or false negative roentgen findings could¢¥nt be found.
